The Silver Line-Up

Every circulation strike of the Kennedy Half Dollar, Washington Quarter and U.S. Dime — by year, by mint, with the silver years glowing gold. Weights checked against the U.S. Mint's own specifications. Real coin photos, shown to true scale against each other (≈1.6× actual size, the dashed rings below are true 1:1).

Silver cheat sheet

Four simple rules of thumb. If it's a half dollar dated 1964 it's 90% silver; 1965–1970 it's 40% silver; a quarter dated 1964 or earlier is 90% silver; and any dime before 1965 is 90% silver. Everything newer is copper-nickel clad — no silver at all.

✦ The weight tells the truth

Silver doesn't look much different from clad, but it weighs different. A 90% half dollar is 1.16 g heavier than a clad half — a 40% half is 0.16 g heavier. Quarters differ by 0.58 g, dimes by 0.232 g. One cheap scale and a coin's weight tells you what it's made of faster than your eyes ever will.

U.S. Mint specifications vs. the real coin

Weights & specifications

Two layers of weight data. First, the official specification per era (below). Then — the important part — the weight each year’s coins are actually published at, because they are not all identical: PCGS CoinFacts, the U.S. Mint, NGC and Numista don’t always agree on the same year, and the differences are exactly what a scale will show you.

⚖ How to weight-sort your stack

A scale is the fastest triage tool in coin hunting — one coin alone can wobble inside the Mint's official tolerance (±0.45 g half · ±0.23 g quarter · ±0.09 g dime), so the smart move is batches of ten. Clean coins only — dirt and gunk add grams.

The smarter trick — weigh ten at a time

Per-coin gaps get amplified tenfold, far past scale error. Any 0.1 g kitchen scale can call these.

📌 Weight points the way — the date is the verdict. When a half reads 11.4–11.6 g, confirm 1965–70 for 40% silver; a few hundredths off (halves published at 11.30 g, 2024–25 at 11.20 g, dimes at 2.27 g) is normal planchet variation and never pulls a clad coin into silver territory.

Half dollar mintages

The only coin on this list that straddles both silver eras. 1964 = 90% silver. 1965–1970 = 40% silver (1965–67 carried no mint marks at all; 1968–70 circulation halves came from Denver only). From 1971 it's clad — and since 2002, mostly a collector's coin. Each row is collapsed to the annual total; the per-mint split rides in small type below it. Gold rows are 90% silver, violet rows are 40%.

Quarter mintages

All quarters through 1964 are 90% silver. 1965–67 carried no mint marks (one combined figure per year). 1976 was the Bicentennial (dual-dated 1776–1976). From 1999 the reverse rotated through states, parks and notable women — every one of them clad. S* = San Francisco collector/proof strikes, shown in the small-print split for context, never counted in the annual total.

Dime mintages

Two designs, one rule: anything before 1965 is 90% silver. The Mercury (Winged Liberty) dime ran 1916–1945; the Roosevelt dime took over in 1946 and went clad in 1965. The 1996-W Roosevelt dime was a special circulation release from West Point. Rows are annual totals, with the P/D/S/W split in small type.

Bonus: the quiet silver

Silver Jefferson nickels — the 35% silver years

When nickel became a critical war metal in 1942, Congress authorized a substitute alloy — 56% copper · 35% silver · 9% manganese, zero nickel, still vending-machine friendly. The coin kept its normal 5.00 g weight and plain edge, so these "war nickels" spent decades passing unnoticed at face value. Spot them by the large mint mark above Monticello on the reverse.

Annual totals with the mint split in small type · 1942-D and small-mintmark 1942-P stayed in the pre-war alloy (no silver)

📌 The 1942 catch: the 13,938,000 Denver nickels and the small-mintmark Philadelphia issues of 1942 stayed in the pre-war 75/25 alloy — only the big-mintmark issues are silver. Pull one from a roll and it's worth about $3.63 in silver at current spot.

Sources & method

Mintage figures are circulation (business) strikes only — proofs and collector finishes are excluded from annual totals. Data was gathered from multiple independent numismatic references and cross-checked against each other:

Corrections applied: 1964-P half business strike set to 273,304,004 (excludes 3,950,762 proofs); 2025 halves use final figures 14.2M / 19.8M; 2022-D half 4,900,000. Data files (data/*.csv) and scripts ship alongside this report for full traceability.
